Productivity and Efficiency Analysis in Agriculture Course Award Ceremony

The University of Western Australia (UWA), School of Agriculture & Environment in collaboration with The University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of Agricultural Economics with support from The Australia Africa University Networks and Africa Research Engagement Centre, organized Master Class in Productivity and Efficiency Analysis in Agriculture. The course was offered between 2nd August and 27th August, 2021 through online weekly sessions. It was facilitated by Amin W. Mugera, Associate Professor UWA School of Agriculture and Environment (SAgE) and hosted by Prof. John Mburu, Chairman, UoN Department of Agricultural Economics.

A total of forty five (45) MSc and PhD students drawn from nine (9) Africa countries (Botswana, Congo, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Togo) and four (4) faculty members successfully completed the course and were awarded with certificates on 22nd October, 2021 at a ceremony that took place at Upper Kabete, Faculty of Agriculture. Participating students and faculty members honed their skills and knowledge in efficiency analysis using DEA which they would apply in their professionals and future research projects.

Participating trainees had the following to say about the course:

“Having done Performance Measurements with Data Envelopment Analysis, I acquired skill in DEA programming in Microsoft Excel which will help me to benchmark performance of different Decision-Making Units. I will be able to determine the virtual inputs a certain DMU needs to be using so that it can become more efficient. The knowledge on scale efficiency will help me to advice firms, if they are too small, they need to scale up or if they are too large they need to scale down in order for them to be efficient”, Milkah Maina.

“The Masterclass in Performance Measurement using DEA facilitated by Dr. Amin Mugera was very exciting. I gained practical skills in Efficiency Analysis using the non-parametric approach. I look forward to applying this knowledge in my research work and future studies”, Wycliffe Otieno.

The University appreciates UWA School of Agriculture & Environment for the impactful training and The Australia Africa University Networks and Africa Research Engagement Centre for sponsoring the course.
