University of Nairobi/University of Helsinki Call for Graduate (PhD & Masters) Fellowship Applications

Applicants for the fellowships PhD and masters must have relevant masters and bachelor degrees with strong backgrounds in biogeography, remote sensing-GIS applications in rangelands, forests and water resources management.

The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies, University of Nairobi is calling for applications for PhD and masters fellowships under the Earth Observation and Environmental Sensing for Climate-smart Sustainable Agropastoral Ecosystem Transformation in East Africa (ESSA) Programme to be undertaken in partnership with the Department of Geosciences and Geography, University of Helsinki in Finland. The programme will offer a PhD fellowship tenable at University of Helsinki and a masters fellowship at University of Nairobi.

The students will undertake rangeland livelihood improvement related research with emphasis on remote sensing applications in rangeland biodiversity change analysis including carbon sequestration, invasive species, dryland wetland ecosystems and wildlife conservation. The research work will be undertaken in the Amboseli region and Taita Taveta. The students will be expected to publish a minimum of 2-3 papers in reputable journals before their graduation. The students are expected to begin their studies in September 2020.
