UNES Consultants Give Back to the Society

Dr.Evans Chimoita and Dr.Lucy Karega; who lectures in the department and also UNES(University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services Limited) Consultants,were at Sigowet  and Soin Wards (Kericho County)  yesterday demonstrating on how to plant sorghum. It's one of the activities among others aimed at empowering sorghum, finger millet & indigenous chicken on value chain enterprise development in the County.

Dennis Nguma Turns to Agribusiness During COVID -19 Pandemic College Break

The Agricultural and Applied Economics Masters  finalist in  the department spends his time in his fruit farm in Mavindini,Makueni county.He opted to invest his Agricultural Economics knowledge and  time wisely during this COVID-19 pandemic as colleges are on a break.Every morning, he goes round the farm scouting for pests and signs of diseases on the plants. He also checks if the drip lines are working and unblocks those that might be clogged.

First Virtual Graduation Ceremony is Only a Few Weeks Away

The 63rd University of Nairobi graduation ceremony will be held virtually on September 25, 2020. This was revealed by the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama in his address to the University community of July 24, 2020.

“We are going to hold the 63rd graduation ceremony virtually on September 25, 2020,” he announced. “We plan to graduate all qualified graduands for PhDs, Masters, Bachelors, Diplomas and fellowships.”

The Vice-Chancellor called on all to continue exercising caution by observing the guidelines issued by the government through the Ministry of Health.

UoN Ranked Ten In Africa

The University of Nairobi is position 10 in Africa according to the just released July 2020 Webometrics Ranking.

The ranking web of universities places UoN at position 1 in the East African region and 956 in the world. In the four parameters considered in this ranking, the UoN is position 198 in the presence rank, 1075 in impact, 749 in the openness rank and 1602 in excellence. The Ranking Web or Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of higher education institutions.

Factors influencing the adoption of pre-harvest practices among mango farmers in Embu and Machakos counties, Kenya

Pre-harvest practices (PHPs) are key to sustainable mango farming, including their impact on fruit quality at harvest and post-harvest longevity. However, the adoption of these practices is still below the expected levels for optimal production. This paper analyses the determinants of the extent of adoption of PHPs using cross-sectional data collected in Embu and Machakos counties of Kenya. Multivariate probit and ordered probit models were applied. The results reveal that there are significant correlations among the PHPs.

UoN Exists to Intellectually Conquer According to uniRank

uniRank has placed the University of Nairobi at position 7 in the 2020 African University Ranking. The ranking recognizes the most popular top 200 higher-education institutions in Africa.

Interestingly, the first 6 universities in the ranking are from South Africa led by the University of Pretoria. University of Cape Town and University of Witwatersrand are in position 2 and 3 respectively. In East Africa, Kenyatta University was ranked 16 followed by Makerere University at number 20.

Online Examination Kicks Off In The Department

The chairman of the department of Agricultural Economics, Prof .John Mburu is happy to announce that online exams have successfully kicked off.The exams started off with Institutional and Behavioral Economics  and the students who set for the exam were delighted to have done their exams in that unusual way which was resulted by COVID-19 pandemic that has advocated for social distancing.
