Introduction

The Department of Agricultural Economics is as old as the Faculty of Agriculture, born in 1970, with Prof. Heinz U. Thimm as the first chairman. Prof. Thimm is now retired in Germany but is still actively involved in pursuits of bettering the agricultural economics profession. The leadership of the department has changed hands eight times since then. Initially the department offered various service courses for BSc Agriculture only, but has now diversified to offer two undergraduate and three postgraduate programmes, besides the service courses. The department strives to meet manpower requirements and to contribute in its own right in agricultural development in this country and in the region.
